Sept 13, 2023 – Reversing Falls, St. John, New Brunswick

After a relatively busy season with our cottage rental business, Melissa and I needed a mini-vacation.  So, I blocked off 4 days from the cottage booking system so we could travel to St. John, New Brunswick.  I’ve driven through St. John a number times on motorcycle trips, but never explored the city. This was a first time for both of us.  Melissa wanted to visit the “container village” near the waterfront and shop the in the open street markets.  My agenda was to see the famous Reversing Falls rapids and do some street photography in the city.  Unfortunately, neither the weather nor the road systems worked in our favour, moreover, the street markets were closed.  There was constant rain and fog as well as multiple road closures and detours.  Thankfully, I was able to see the Reversing Falls at high tide and Melissa got some shopping done in various malls.

The Reversing Falls are a series of rapids that appear on the St. John river which runs through a narrow gorge before emptying into the Bay of Fundy.  The fast moving tides force the flow of water to reverse against the prevailing current when the tide is high.  The “falls” are created by a series of underwater ledges which roll the water in either direction creating powerful whirlpools.  A bridge overlooks the river and there is a visitor center which features a glass bottom skywalk over the rapids.  Unfortunately the fog and rain made it difficult to see anything through the glass, however, the view from the skywalk provided an excellent vantage point to see the rapids at high tide.  Most of these photos were taken from that location.

I shot the following video around 5:45 PM at high tide.
