June 7, 2021 – Checking out “Cormorant City” in Stratford PEI

This was quite the productive and fun day.  After taking some early morning bald eagle photos on the shores of Covehead beach, I rode my Harley out to Mount Stewart for lunch and then to the bridge which connects Charlottetown to Stratford.  The bridge itself is dull, but it reveals something remarkable on the remains of the original bridge.

Each summer, hundreds of cormorants return to nest on the piers of the old bridge.  Because of ongoing construction, it has been difficult to get under the bridge, but this time I found an opening where I could park my bike.  I walked down a dirt path to the shore and watched these strange looking aquatic birds go about their business.  There was a constant din of activity with cormorants constantly landing and taking off.  The amount of airborne activity could easily rival some of the world’s busiest airports.  Hence, I’ve nicknamed it Cormorant City.

In two photos, you’ll spot a large seagull next to the cormorants.  To give you an idea how big this gull is, cormorants are slightly larger than mallard ducks.
