June 9, 2021 – Photographing PEI Lupines with Old Russian Lenses

Lupines by Prince Edward Island. Images courtesy of Russia and Japan.

One thing we islanders look forward to as summer begins are thousands of lupines that adorn roadside ditches.  For a few short weeks these beautiful weeds are found everywhere and are a perennial favourite of photographers.  This year I wanted to do something different and produce images that are apparently more analog than digital.  So, I photographed these lupines with two vintage Russian lenses mounted to a Sony A7III camera. The two lenses are the Helios 44-2 55mm f/2.0 and Jupiter-11 135mm f/4.0.

These lenses are around 50 years old and produce pleasing, bold and vibrant colours with nifty swirly backgrounds. Often times I prefer these old lenses with their quirky and sometimes flawed personalities over surgically accurate modern lenses.  Best of all, these lenses cost peanuts – the Helios 44-2 can often be purchased for less than a tank of gas.

Russian Jupiter-11 135mm f/4.0 lens mounted to my Sony A7III.  A cold war lens some call “the rocket”.
Russian Helios 44-2 55mm f/2.0. A lens with swirly background blur and heaps of character.  It’s probably cheaper than your last electrical bill
